As a child, I recall feeling upset whenever I witnessed a road or housing estate under construction. Influenced by "Watership Down" and my own instinctive understanding of nature, like many, it left a poignant and reflective mark on my mind. My vivid and emotional imagination never forgot or ceased mourning for the burrows and nests that were lost.
With every new development, I continue to think about the wildlife, aware that even the newly created nature areas cannot restore the lost habitat or bring back what is gone.
"Dolly Mouse and Friends" was written before there was much awareness of habitat destruction and how the impact of human activity was such a huge impact. Nonetheless, it subtly alludes to global and man-made destruction, encouraging young readers to be mindful of wildlife and its habitat. With a few sweet adventure stories and interesting facts, it may not be the most thrilling read, yet it comes from the heart of an author who once discovered a dormouse and hid its nest in the leaky porch of an old vicarage long ago. Please find below an extract about Dolly the hazel Dormouse.
Dolly the hazel dormouse has a cosy nest in the roots of an oak tree. Her perfect little nest is filled with soft moss and scrumptious sweet smelling honeysuckle bark. Dolly likes to eat honeysuckle and especially likes to eat hazel nuts. Dolly is nocturnal and sleeps for most of the day. Then when dusk falls she leaves her snug nest to go foraging. Before the winter months Dolly dormouse will be a full up little mouse. Ready to sleep through the cold winter, this is called hibernation. Dolly dormouse is the sweetest mouse ever to see with a dainty blunt nose, sharp long whiskers, shiny big black eyes, round large ears and a golden brown velvet coat with a smart cream tummy all compact in a cute little round body.
